Food safety, trade and data-driven decision-making are among the topics set to be discussed at next week's first-ever walnut industry conference.

The California Walnut Board and Commission are hosting the event, which will be held online from 8 a.m. to noon March 2-3. The conference is being held virtually because of coronavirus-related restrictions on public gatherings.

"Although we’d love to be hosting this event in person, shifting to a virtual conference was the most viable option at this time given the current uncertainty caused by the global pandemic," said executive director and CEO Michelle Connelly, who will be giving a "State of the Industry" speech during the conference.

The free conference will include:

  • Speaking sessions and panels for growers, handlers, and industry partners

  • Various educational discussions including “Food Safety - New Era of Smarter Food Safety,” “Advocating for Your Future Success – Trade in 2021 & Beyond,” and “How Data Drives Decision Making in Marketing”

  • Informational sessions with top speakers and panelists including Michele Golden at Mintel Group Ltd. and Laurie Demeritt at The Hartman Group

Organizers urge those who are interested in the conference to register because if for some reason they are unable to attend the live virtual event, they can still receive recorded event content.

The virtual gathering comes as the online Almond Conference in December drew 3,213 attendees, according to the Almond Board of California. The annual event typically draws 4,000 people to the downtown convention center in Sacramento.

The American Pistachio Growers cancelled their conference, set for March 1-3 in Monterey, because of COVID-19-related restrictions.
