Corn’s condition rating dropped 2 points in the latest week to 74% good to excellent due to downgrades in Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, South Dakota and Missouri, while soybeans were unchanged at 72%, USDA said on Monday.

Based on the drop in corn’s condition ratings, Farm Futures lowered its calculated corn yield to 173.4 bpa from last week’s 175.8. It raised the calculated average soybean yield a fraction to 49.6 in a range of 48.1 to 49.9 bushels per acre.

Corn is at 9% dented and 53% in the dough stage nationally, compared with the 12% and 42% averages. Soybeans are at 69% in setting pods and 91% blooming versus the averages of 61% and 88%, respectively.

Indiana’s corn rating dropped to 73% good/excellent from the previous 77% and soybeans went to 74% from 75%.

“Hot temperatures combined with little to no rainfall has left corn and soybeans stressed for moisture,” Greg Matli, Indiana state statistician for the National Agricultural Statistics Service said of Indiana’s weather. “Most of the state went without precipitation or relief from the above average temperatures. Irrigation systems were running at full force where available to keep crops at adequate moisture; however, those without irrigation are seeing increased stress.”

The report also said in drier areas some Indiana soybeans aborted blossoms.

In Iowa, the corn rating was unchanged at 83% good/excellent and its soybeans slipped 1 point to 82%.

“The most widespread rains of the week came on Thursday and Thursday night with rain falling over most of the southeast three-fourths of the state. High winds accompanied the Thursday storms over parts of central and northeastern Iowa,” the Iowa report said. “The statewide average precipitation was 1.25 inches while normal for the week is 0.96 inch."

In Nebraska, corn was 76% good/excellent and soybeans at 77%, compared with 77% and 76% a week ago.

“Precipitation of an inch or more was limited to portions of the southeast and some central areas,” Nebraska said.

Winter wheat harvest was winding out at 94% cut, compared with 96% a year ago and the 91% average.

Spring wheat was 30% harvested, compared with 22% a year ago and the 18% average. The crop was unchanged at 68% good to excellent. North Dakota’s crop also was unchanged at 71% good/excellent. Its harvest was at 22%, versus 11% last year and the 15% average.

Nationally, sorghum coloring was at 31% versus 31% a year ago and the 33% average. The crop’s condition slipped 1 point to 65% good to excellent.
