Grain prices have gone through quite the balancing act in August. Prices were on a downward trend until last Monday, when a deadly round of Midwestern storms tore through millions of acres of farmland, putting the previous consensus of record or near-record crops in doubt. Crop quality has suffered, but some feel as though USDA hasn’t docked crop conditions enough.
On the demand side, China has been a very active buyer of U.S. grains in recent weeks, but has it been enough to move the needle? Competition overseas remains fierce, from Brazilian soybeans to Russian wheat.
It’s a lot to process, but we put our best foot forward in our latest midweek markets discussion.
