California's Gov. Newsom survives recall vote

Nearly two-thirds of voters overall said no, although agricultural counties voted yes.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom appears to have overwhelmingly defeated an attempt to recall him, as the "no" vote registered nearly 64% overall with an estimated 68% of ballots counted, according to The Associated Press.

The recall was leading in a swath of counties in the state's agricultural region from Kern to Siskiyou -- some by wide margins.

Newsom, a former San Francisco mayor and lieutenant governor, was elected overwhelmingly in 2018 but faced criticism over his handling of coronavirus lockdowns, homelessness and water and forest policy.

Farm groups were silent about the recall and have given him mixed reviews as governor.
