Mike Pearson tells listeners about a push to revise global trade regulations involving the poultry industry.

There are a group of bipartisan legislators rallying to revise global trade regulations that allow for the significant trade disruptions based on the detection of Avian flu in non-commercial settings.

The detection of HPAI in a backyard flock or a hunting preserve should not impact the overall exportability of that country's poultry.

Those birds are unlikely ti spread the virus to a commercial flock.

Currently, any detection can trigger the ban on international poultry sales.

A report shows that over $900 million in interrupted poultry trade was lost in 2023.

The legislators are asking USDA APHIS to get involve and change the definition of the flu outbreak in poultry.

The legislators say the farmers' livelihoods are at stake.

One example can be found in China where the country has banned the import of poultry from 14 states that currently do not have any outbreaks of the virus.

Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
