This fall, Corteva Agriscience launched a new nematicide that will help farmers protect a wide range of specialty crops from plant-parasitic nematode damage. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently registered Salibro nematicide with Reklemel active and gave it a Reduced Risk designation.

Salibro nematicide is a first-of-its-kind product that controls plant-parasitic nematodes without disrupting the healthy balance of beneficial organisms in the soil. Sustaining a range of beneficial insects, including pollinators, Salibro nematicide will help soil organisms improve soil quality. Salibro nematicide stays in the root zone for extended residual protection from plant-parasitic nematodes.

“The launch of Salibro nematicide marks a major advancement for the industry,” says Jaret Fipps, product marketing lead with Corteva Agriscience. “It provides growers with a novel nonfumigant solution that controls a wide range of damaging nematodes, such as root-knot nematodes, and reduces the overall environmental impact compared with other nematicides.”

Salibro nematicide is labeled for use in the following crop groups — nonbearing tree nuts, nonbearing grapes, cucurbits, nonbearing stone fruit, carrots, fruiting vegetables, nonbearing citrus, potatoes and sweet potatoes — with additional crops and use in bearing, permanent crops (tree nuts, grapes and citrus) to be added in subsequent registration submissions.

“This product can be applied through a broad range of application timings, including preplant, at-plant or in-crop,” Fipps says. “Growers who use Salibro nematicide in combination with cultural, mechanical and biological management practices in Integrated Pest Management strategies can enhance increase yield and reduce quality losses associated with plant-parasitic nematode damage.”

Reklemel active, the active ingredient in Salibro nematicide, is one of the first new active ingredients registered under the U.S. EPA policy that incorporates Endangered Species Act assessments into the registration process for new pesticides. This new process is an important step toward regulatory certainty for farmers and others who rely on important pesticide technology while helping protect listed species and their habitats.
