Temperatures topping 100 degrees in some parts of the Midwest started to take a toll on spring planted crops this week, but there’s one set of growers loving the hot weather. Winter wheat growers are gearing up harvest and rain is the last thing their fields need.

USDA reported record winter wheat yields in its June 10 report, and producers responding to Feedback From The Field couldn’t agree more. Their assessment of their crop improved last week, with the average better than good.

“Crop looks exceptional,” reported a grower near Salina, Kansas, in the heart of hard red winter wheat country. A Kentucky farmer reported soft red winter wheat also doing well.

Corn in southeast Minnesota is on track to be past knee high by the Fourth of July.

“Wheat harvest 75% complete with quality very good and yield from 15% to 20% above average,” said the producer, whose first corn will begin pollinating next week.

But corn and soybeans appear to be headed in the other direction in some areas. “Very short on moisture, crops maturing quickly and alfalfa is extremely poor,” posted a North Dakota producer.

A dry pocket is also developing between I-70 and I-80 in the western Midwest. “Corn has been rolling for a week here. That is two weeks earlier than 2012,” noted a Missouri grower. Another from that state said crops were OK, for now: “Two weeks ago was our last rain and we were extremely wet. Now we could use a rain after 90+ temps for most of that time. Corn still ok but getting tall and needing a drink soon!”

Another producer from Ohio didn’t mince words: “Need rain“

Overall farmers reporting said fields were still a little above average, but their ratings were down from the previous week.
