It was a wet spring for Texas specialty crop producers in South Texas, including vegetable growers and producers of fruit and berries.

Heavy rains in March, April and May created problems for many. Some crops were damaged by sporadic hail and high winds. Most producers say they benefited from rain showers, though wet fields created problems for onion and cabbage harvest in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

From commercial growers to small organic farmers who mostly sold their products at farmer's markets, good soil moisture is credited with giving a late season boost to most vegetable and specialty crops from the Texas Winter Garden to farms in the Valley and the Coastal Bend.
