Bays is new state FFA president

More than 3,000 FFA members attended the state convention

Brenna Bays of Adams-Friendship FFA was elected to serve as the Wisconsin State FFA president for 2016-2017 at the conclusion of the 87th Wisconsin FFA Convention. Bays served as the parliamentarian on the 2015-2016 state FFA officer team. The 19 year old is a sophomore at University of Wisconsin-Platteville majoring in agricultural education. Her parents are James Bays II and Molly Wiese. She succeeds Sally Albers of Sauk Prairie FFA who was the 2015-2016 state FFA president.

The convention was held June 13-16 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. The theme of the convention was “Be FFA.” More than 3,000 FFA members attended the state convention.

A new state officer was elected from each of the state’s 10 sections. Following are the names of newly elected officers for 2016-2017 and a little bit about each of them.

*Rylee Black, treasurer, is a member of Amery FFA from Section 1. Black will be a freshman at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where she is majoring in animal science. She is the daughter of Barry and Deena Black.

*Caleb Green, vice president, is a member of Stanley-Boyd FFA from Section 2. Green will be a freshman at Hamline University where he is majoring in mathematics. He is planning to earn a teaching degree. He is the son of Glen and Shannon Green.

*Laura Munger, secretary, is a member of Holmen FFA from Section 3. Munger plans to attend South Dakota State University to study pre-veterinary medicine while seeking a degree in biology. She is the daughter of Don and Jane Munger.

*Kari Fischer, parliamentarian, is a member of Argyle FFA from Section 4. Fischer will be a freshman at UW-Madison where she plans to major in political science or biology. She would like to be an attorney or work in genetics. She is the daughter of Caroline Rossing and Roger Fischer.

*Ciera Ballmer, vice president, is a member of Clinton FFA from Section 5. Ballmer will be a freshman at UW-Madison where she plans to double major in dairy science and life sciences communications. She is the daughter of Ronna Morton Ballmer and the late Jerry Ballmer.

*Hannah Taylor, reporter, is a member of Poynette FFA from Section 6. She is a student at Kansas State University where she is majoring in agricultural communications and journalism. She is the daughter of Todd and Lynette Taylor.

*Ashley Zimmerman, vice president, is a member of Spencer FFA from Section 7. Zimmerman is a student at UW-River Falls where she is majoring in agricultural education. She plans to pursue a master's degree in ag education from Kansas State University before returning to Wisconsin to teach. She is the daughter of Mark and Cheryl Zimmerman.

*Dani Angotti, vice president, is a member of Freedom FFA from Section 8. Angotti will be a freshman at UW-River Falls where she plans to major in agricultural education. She is the daughter of Daniel and Michelle Angotti.

*Sarah Van Asten, vice president, is a member of Wrightstown FFA from Section 9. She is planning to attend University of Illinois in Urbana, Ill., and major in agricultural education. After graduation, she plans to return to Wisconsin and teach agriculture. She is the daughter of Tom and Susan Van Asten.

*Travis Cadman, sentinel, is a member of East Troy FFA from Section 10. Cadman plans to attend UW-Platteville and major in agricultural education. Cadman is the son of Tammy and Mark Cadman.

Each state officer will meet thousands of FFA members and will travel more than 10,000 miles during the next year. They will attend the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., in October and will meet leaders in government, education, business and agriculture.

Even though Fran was born and raised on a farm in Illinois, she has spent most of her life in Wisconsin. She moved to the state when she was 18 years old and later graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a bachelor's degree in journalism.

Before becoming editor of the Wisconsin Agriculturist in 2003, she worked at Johnson Hill Press in Fort Atkinson as a writer and editor of farm business publications and at the Janesville Gazette in Janesville as farm editor and feature writer. Later, she signed on as a public relations associate at Bader Rutter in Brookfield, and served as managing editor and farm editor at The Reporter, a daily newspaper in Fond du Lac.
