It’s almost a glass half-full situation for sorghum producers as they battle one of the most destructive grain sorghum pests. They have two products they can use to control outbreaks of sugarcane aphids – Sivanto and Transform.

Sivanto has a Section 3 label while Transform can be applied in 15 states in 2016 under a Section 18 emergency exemption, which the National Sorghum Producers, Extension specialists and Dow AgroSciences, which manufactures sulfoxaflor or Transform, worked for months to obtain.

The National Sorghum Producers’ Tim Lust says growers are grateful for the Extension and industry support that obtained the Section 18 emergency exemption, but Lust says growers need more certainty in the availability of both products to avoid resistance and improve their bottom lines.

Lust spoke at the Dow AgroSciences “Strongest in the Field” media and producer event at the Capps Center at the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville, Miss.
