Hurricane Michael knocked the country's top pecan-producing state on its heels for two years. With the 2020 harvest kicking off, all signs show Georgia's pecan crop will be the largest in more than a decade and set the state back on top.

University of Georgia Extension pecan specialist Lenny Wells joined Southeast Farm Press editor Brad Haire in a south Georgia pecan orchard where harvest was getting underway. The state's rebound had a lot to do with time and the pecan tree's natural agility, but growers had to work, too, to get back on top.

Even with the promise of a strong crop, nothing is guaranteed as the Gulf of Mexico continued to spawn threatening storms in what has been no typical hurricane season.
