Mike Pearson takes a look at the ramifications of the discovery of the Asian Longhorned tick in Missouri.

Mike Pearson tells us how the Asian Longhorned tick was found in Missouri last week.

It was first discovered in New Jersey in 2016 and it has spread west since then.

Disease is the major concern with Theileria orientalis and causes bovine infectious anemia and causes high fevers in cattle.

Asian Longhorned ticks are asexual. This means they don’t need the other sex to reproduce.

This is a major problem because it allows the ticks to multiply in a short amount of time. And then the number of ticks can kills calves.

Researchers at various universities have found ticks are moving west and south.

Livestock owners are reminded to check animals for ticks often and pay attention for lethargy and patchy hair.

Use pesticides—wont’ kill all of the ticks but will ease the stress on the animals.

Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, a farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
