The latest California Crop Weather report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Sacramento, Calif., Field Office:

Weather

Except for gusty, northerly winds in northern and central California Friday through Sunday, there was no significant weather over California this past week (week of June 7).

Field crops

Alfalfa was cut and baled with most areas harvesting the second or third cuttings. Harvested fields were prepared for bean planting. Fields were treated for alfalfa weevil in Siskiyou County.

Rice fields were planted and treated for weeds. Wheat, oat, and barley harvests continued.

Lygus started to appear in southern San Joaquin Valley (SJV) cotton fields. Corn and sorghum for silage was planted. Some field crops received the first irrigation of the season as a result of warmer temperatures.

Fruit crops

In the SJV, the picking of Valencia oranges continued as the Navel orange harvest slowed. The lemon harvest was ongoing along the coast. Olive groves showed good development.

The strawberry, blueberry, and blackberry harvests were ongoing in the SJV. Strawberry nurseries in Siskiyou County showed good development as preventive fungicides were applied.

Insecticide applications to control the European grapevine moth were made in grape vineyards in the Napa Valley, along with suckering, shoot removal, and row cultivation. SJV grape vineyards showed good canopy growth as the suckering of vines was completed.

The cherry harvest neared completion, though split damage from rain has significantly impacted the quantity and quality of the crop.

Fruit orchards across California showed good development overall, but were approximately two weeks behind normal due to ongoing cool temperatures.

Nut crops

Cool temperatures delayed development in almond orchards, though trees remained healthy and insect presence was limited. Fungicide applications were made in almond and pistachio orchards along with normal irrigation.

Vegetable crops

Vegetable field work and herbicide treatments continued in the Sacramento Valley. The asparagus harvest was over in the northern SJV. Bell pepper, cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, and tomato fields were planted. Parsley harvest continued.

In the southern SJV, sweet corn was planted. Broccoli and cauliflower matured. Processing tomatoes were weeded and irrigated. The progress has been delayed by the unusually cool weather.
