Spider mite damage can be costly for grape growers

Growers fight numerous pests throughout the life cycle of grapes. Many recognize spider mites as one of the key pests they must control to protect their crops and bottom lines.

Research from the University of California Cooperative Extension shows how spider mites can cause significant cellular damage to grape vines. Specifically, Tetranychus pacificus – more commonly known as the Pacific spider mite – is the primary pest mite species for grapes in the San Joaquin Valley and is appearing more and more in certain North Coast grape-growing areas. Adult Pacific spider mite females vary in color from amber to greenish; later in the season, adult females can turn orange to reddish. These pests prefer the warmer, upper canopy of the vine. They can cause damage early in the season, but Pacific spider mites often prefer the hotter, dryer part of the grape-growing season. Depending on location, growers also should be on the lookout for the Willamette spider mite, Eotetranychus willamettei, and the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae.

Evaluate the spray program in use to make sure to keep mite populations in check. The key to controlling undesirable mites while maintaining beneficial insect populations is to use the right chemistry at the right time.

Three products from the Arysta LifeScience portfolio of products for grapes – ACRAMITE®, KANEMITE® and OMITE® Miticides – can play key roles in the successful fight against the Pacific spider mite and other spider-mite species.

  •  ACRAMITE® Miticide offers control against a variety of spider mites, at all life stages, in grapes up to 30 days, and it can be used any time during the season, up to 14 days before harvest. Additionally, ACRAMITE goes easy on beneficial insects and predator mites, so it won’t cause secondary insect pest or spider mite flare-ups. With over 15 years of real-world results behind it and a sterling reputation in today’s marketplace, grape growers trust ACRAMITE to deliver the proven protection their crops need.

  •  KANEMITE® Miticide provides fast knockdown and a seven-day pre-harvest interval, making it a smart solution for spider mite management in grapes at any time during the growing season. Specifically, KANEMITE is effective against Pacific spider mite, two-spotted spider mite and Willamette spider mite. Unlike some miticides, KANEMITE is easy on predatory mites and other beneficial species; it also won’t cause flare-ups of secondary insect pests or spider mites. Its unique active ingredient – acequinocyl – makes it the ideal choice for managing mite resistance in grape vineyards.

  •  OMITE® Miticide provides a unique fuming action which penetrates dense webbing and nooks and crannies where many other miticides cannot reach, making it the go-to rescue treatment in grapes. OMITE fumes are repellent to spider mites, flushing them out of these refugia and exposing them to the residues; therefore, it is has three routes of entry into the spider mite: 1) contact; 2) residual; and 3) inhalation. It can be used anytime during the growing season, up to 21 days before harvest. The product is rainfast after drying and offers residual control for up to 39 days, making OMITE effective throughout the growing season. It is soft on beneficial insects at all rates and predator mites at the low rate, and it will not cause flare-ups of secondary insect pests or spider mites. Arysta LifeScience recommends rotating or tank-mixing with miticides that have different modes of action to prevent development of resistance to OMITE.

Additionally, the University of California Cooperative Extension recommends checking for spider mites during rapid shoot growth on the first emerging leaves. At bloom, divide the vineyard into quadrants and in each quadrant, randomly select five vines (each at least a few vines in from the end of the row). Look for mites weekly on each of the 20 vines using a 10-14X lens to ensure proper treatment of any infestations. Track mite development. This mite monitoring form from the University of California is a helpful means to stay on top of mite pressure and plan treatment timing.
