MICHIGAN VISIT: Shelly Hartmann (fourth from left), owner of True Blue Farm LLC in Grand Junction, Mich., met with Vietnamese officials during their recent visit.

Michigan blueberries soon may be making their way across the world to Vietnamese consumers.

A new market is opening to Vietnam, after a delegation visit and tour of Michigan’s blueberry-growing region last summer. Now, Vietnam reportedly is opening “its border to fresh blueberry imports from the U.S.” starting this month.

The tour, hosted by the Michigan Blueberry Commission, allowed “the Vietnamese delegation to see the rigorous process our state’s growers go through in order to ensure their product is stable for shipping,” MBC Executive Director Kevin Robson says.

“There is no doubt, even if Michigan blueberries aren’t the first to see the new markets, due to proximity, we still win,” says Robson, who also is the associate marketing agribusiness specialist for Farm Bureau Insurance. “Any blueberries shipped to Vietnam will take away some of the domestic pressures we often see in the marketplace around harvest time. On behalf of the Michigan Blueberry Commission, we are excited to see what this new relationship means for Michigan blueberry farmers.”
