Mark Yoder grazed 60 cow-calf pairs on forage annuals during the last two weeks of September and into early October last year.
Luke Wilson’s cattle were strip-grazing a forage mix of stockpiled oats and turnips in late November last year.
“Having annual forage species in the grazing rotation has worked well,” Yoder says. “When other people were running out of pasture, we had cows in the field eating forage that was 8 feet tall.”
Wilson uses single-strand wires to divide his annual forages into strips so cattle can rotationally graze. Note the wire in bottom-right corner.
Wilson’s mix of ryegrass, oats and brassicas are his preferred mix of annual species to provide forage for year-round grazing.
