AWARD WINNER: The Summers Manufacturing VT-Flex Applicator, which places three products in four different rows, won an AE50 award.

Summers Manufacturing, Devils Lake, N.D., has recently been recognized with two 2017 AE50 product awards from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering. The awarded products are the Spray Fill Xpress and VT Flex Applicator.

“This is a great honor for us,” says Debra Anderson, Summers president. “I couldn’t be more proud of everyone here who continues to push the boundaries with our equipment. They never settle for ‘good enough,’ and it shows.”

The patent-pending VT Flex Applicator is a fully customizable fertilizer application tool. Not only does it precisely place up to three mediums (dry, liquid and anhydrous ammonia) at high speeds, but it can also be set to 15-, 20-, 22- or 30-inch row spacing. Coulter blades and application knives can be configured to unique residue management needs for the ultimate flexibility to enhance any soil fertility program.

The Spray Fill Xpress was designed to mitigate the time commitment of filling sprayers. It can increase spraying productivity by as much as 82%, thanks to its uniquely designed chemical batching process. It greatly expedites filling time, reducing a 30-minute chore to less than seven minutes. Less time filling sprayers means farmers can spray more acres per day.

DESIGN RECOGNITION: The Summers Spray Fill Express, which reduces the time it takes to mix chemical to fill a sprayer, received an AE50 award.

ASABE is an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to the advancement of agricultural, food and biological system engineering. AE50 awards honor the year’s most innovative designs in engineering products or systems for the food and agriculture industries. Submissions for the annual AE50 competition come from all over the world. A panel of engineering experts chooses only 50, representing engineering developments that help farmers, food processors and equipment manufacturers increase efficiency, quality, safety and profits.

“To receive these industry awards is certainly humbling and greatly appreciated. But the real icing on the cake is the high marks we get from farmers,” says Brian Perkuhn, Summers vice president of sales. “We will continue to push the boundaries of agricultural machinery innovation so that farmers can increase productivity, efficiency and, ultimately, their profitability.”
