Rather than taking up to 6 percent of his pine trees out of production for wildlife food plots, Bobby Watkins plants his forest access lanes with clover and other forages to provide food for turkeys, deer, and quail. Using herbicides and controlled burning to kill unwanted vegetation in the forest understory encourages the growth of desirable vegetation to provide additional food and cover for wildlife.
