Six Midwestern governors, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb, Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts, Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer and South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard sent a letter to President Trump thanking him for his continued support of the Renewable Fuel Standard and urging him to reject proposals designed to weaken or waive the RFS.

“The purpose of the RFS is to grow the demand for biofuels while driving the industry to innovate,” Reynolds said. “Any effort to undermine the RFS, including putting a cap on RINs, would be devastating for Iowa farmers and Iowa’s economy.”

“At the core of this debate is Senator Ted Cruz’s RFS waiver credit proposal, or “RIN cap,” which would allow refiners to skirt their RFS obligations, slashing demand for biofuels,” the letter reads. “Simply put, for every waiver credit issued by the EPA under the Cruz plan, the 15 billion-gallon RFS level would be reduced by one gallon. According to multiple studies by Midwest universities, that demand destruction for biofuels would exceed one billion gallons.”

The American Coalition for Ethanol applauds the letter Midwest governors sent to Trump today thanking him for his continued support of the Renewable Fuel Standard and urging the President to reject proposals designed to weaken – or waive – this key pillar of the farm economy, including Senator Ted Cruz’s waiver credit proposal, or “RIN cap.”

“We appreciate the leadership these governors are showing in support of keeping the RFS on track,” said ACE CEO Brian Jennings. “We hope the administration and Congress will listen to their advice and not take any steps to undermine an already shaky farm economy.”
