SO GOOD: Cinnamon rolls cool after baking. South Dakota Wheat is holding its annual Bake and Take Day.RonOrmanJr/iStock/Thinkstock

My mom used to bake cinnamon rolls every Saturday night. They smelled so good and tasted even better. It was hard for all us kids to wait for Sunday morning to eat them.

The reason I’m thinking of cinnamon rolls is that South Dakota Wheat is again holding its Bake and Take Day on Saturday. The commodity group is inviting home bakers of all ages to “slow down, relax and embrace community spirit” by baking home-made goodies and sharing them with friends, neighbors or folks who may not be able to bake themselves.

Bake and Take Day participants can win a prize. Contestants who write in to South Dakota Wheat to tell about their Bake and Take activity will be entered into a random drawing for $50 cash in one of four categories — youth individual (ages 4-17), youth group, adult individual (age 18+) or adult group. All eligible entries collected via email and U.S. mail by April 16 will be included in the drawing.

"Bake and Take Day has a long tradition in South Dakota as an activity to educate consumers in the importance of home baking and wheat foods consumption," says Caren Assman, executive director of South Dakota Wheat. "The personal visit to members of the community is as rewarding and important as the baked goods you take them."

Send a summary of your activity to South Dakota Wheat, Box 667, Pierre, SD 57501, or email the information to [email protected]. Include any community service aspects of your activity, as well as comments regarding how the activity strengthened the bonds between individuals. Anyone who bakes and takes a wheat product is eligible for the contest. Include pictures if you can.

Hmm ... I wonder if I can find my mom’s recipe to bake those cinnamon rolls?
