ONE-OF-A-KIND: What makes this 1946 Chevy flatbed truck unique is that even though it isn’t restored, owner Larry Parker still drives it around town. Tom J. Bechman

If you live in Putnam County, Ind., it’s possible you’ve seen this 1946 Chevrolet 1-ton flatbed truck on the road. Or maybe you’ve seen it parked in town or at church. Larry Parker, proud owner of the truck, says he still drives it to town and church whenever he can.

It’s not restored, and it’s not in mint-condition. It could use some body work down low on the front end, and the rubber strips around the windshield are long gone, but it still runs. And for a vehicle that is 74 years old, that’s saying quite a bit!

Parker displayed the truck at the Putnam County Antique Tractor and Machinery Association’s first-ever show, held Sept. 19 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds in Greencastle. He and his wife, Marilyn, Greencastle, members of the relatively new group, say they didn’t know how many people would show up. As it turns out, there were over 70 antique tractors, many vintage garden tractors and much more on display. Visitors filtered in throughout the day to view the antique machinery from yesteryear.

According to cjponyparts.com, the first Chevrolet truck was produced in 1918. Chevrolet didn’t build civilian trucks from 1942 until August 1945 during the war years. However, the company built a full line of trucks in 1946, the model year for Parker’s truck.

After 1946, Chevrolet switched to what it called the “advanced design” for pickups and 1-ton trucks. So, Parker’s model is one of the last models that resembled trucks first made in 1937.
