The Biotechnology Innovation Organization has released new data on the bioscience industry in the U.S.

The new report, The Bioscience Economy: Propelling Life-Saving Treatments, Supporting State & Local Communities, analyzes the bioscience industry's economic footprint across the nation and in Nebraska, the role of small- and midsized companies, and the industry's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Report highlights include:

  • Nebraska has nearly 18,000 jobs in the bioscience industry.

  • The average annual salary in Nebraska's bioscience industry is about $70,000.

  • Nebraska's research universities conducted $374 million in bioscience-related research and development in 2018.

  • Between 2016 and 2019, there were 578 bioscience-related patents issued in Nebraska.

"The bioscience industry's economic footprint reaches into so many local communities across the country," said Pete Pellerito, Biotechnology Innovation Organization senior policy adviser for federal and state economic development and technology transfer initiatives.

"From capital investments to research and development, this report shows the impact of the biosciences across the nation's innovation ecosystem. The bioscience industry is critically important to Nebraska, and we are proud to work closely with partners like Bio Nebraska to help ensure the future of the industry and its role as an economic driver in the region."

"As we continue to grow the bio-ecosystem in Nebraska, this report provides the necessary data to identify our areas of growth and opportunity in the state," said Rob Owen, executive director of Bio Nebraska. "We are proud to represent our many members who continue to contribute to the progress of the bioscience industry and the effort to fight COVID-19."

The state-by-state industry assessment is the ninth in a biennial series, developed in partnership by TEConomy and the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, and studies the state of the U.S. bioscience industry and its associated innovation ecosystem at the national, state and metropolitan area levels.
