Mike Pearson tells us how the farm bill could be impacted by Proposition 12.
Proposition 12 passed in 2018 and was upheld by the Supreme Court earlier this year. It's sets a precedent that impacts the livestock industry.
The American Farm Bureau Federation fought it at the Supreme Court.
However, the farm bureau says the work isn't done yet. Now, the farm bureau is working to address the challenges created by Proposition 12.
Work is underway now to to include a federal pre-emption in the upcoming farm bill in the miscellaneous section.
Many legislators are referring to it as the EATS ACT. The EATS Act means Ending Agriculture Trade Suppression Act. It would prohibition ag products that don't meet state standards.
However, some legislators say it needs to be more targeted to get through Congress. There are over 200 legislators from non-farm states already saying now.
Something else that could be added is a change to the Packers and Stockyards ACT for poultry processors which would mean changes in 2024.
