Mike Pearson takes a look at the H5N1-- bird flu that has impacted producers across the country.

The consequences have been devastating for producers.

The outbreaks have forced the culling of millions of birds and higher prices for consumers for products such as eggs.

Last year's outbreaks resulted in 58 million birds being culled.

The outbreaks in the past few weeks have resulted in 5.8 million more birds culled.

It's hit turkey farms pretty hard this fall with over a million across several states being culled.

And two egg laying farms in Iowa and Minnesota have been hit with all of their birds being culled.

The virus has producers on high alert even if the outbreaks aren't as common as last year.

Poultry farmers have increased the biosecurity measures to stop the spread of virus which has included the washing trucks as they enter and leave farms and new ventilation systems on many farms.

The hope is that the spread is slowing since fewer wild birds like ducks and geese are being found with it which many are hoping they are gathering an immunity.
