Mike Pearson takes a look at the Meat Demand Monitor and consumers' behavior.

August 18, 2023

Mike Pearson tells listeners about the Meat Demand Monitor published by Kansas State University and clues livestock producers in on consumer behavior.

The Meat Demand Monitor is funded by the beef and pork checkoff dollars. It is aimed at finding out what is happening in the meat industry at grocery stores and restaurants.

The Meat Demand Monitor surveys 2,000 people and asks them when they are eating meat and where they are eating it.

One thing that was clear in this month's monitor is that more consumers were eating more pork and beef in July than in June. It was also clear that consumers are willing to pay for those proteins.

However, consumers are not willing to pay a higher price for shrimp, salmon and plant based meats.

Another question in this week's monitor was related to resistance training which is growing in popularity. More consumers are eating proteins because of their exercise training. Of those surveyed, 37 said they were eating more protein as part of their physical fitness program and as many as 45 percent in California said they were as part of their exercise program.

Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, a farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
