Much of Georgia’s agricultural region affected by Hurricane Michael last fall remains in a critical financial situation due to heavy damage and lose of production and infrastructure. A March 5 meeting in Tifton, Ga., has been scheduled to provide an update on state and federal responses to Hurricane Michael. 

The meeting is being hosted by the Georgia Farm Bureau and the Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association.

The March 5 meeting will take place 7 p.m. at the University of Tifton Campus Conference Center. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black have confirmed they will attend, according to a GFVGA statement announcing the meeting.

“Members of the Georgia congressional delegation have also been hard at work on securing disaster funding for growers hit by Hurricane Michael. As our congressional delegation is back in Washington, they have been invited to participate via video conference,” the statement says.

Georgia’s General Assembly in a special session in November allocated some state-level disaster assistance funding to farmers and rural communities impacted by Hurricane Michael, with additional funding allocations in February. Legislative efforts to fund disaster assistance related to Hurricane Michael at the federal level have not yet gained traction.
