With global climate change progressing rapidly, droughts are predicted to increase in frequency, duration, and severity in the coming years. According to researchers at the London-based policy institute Chatham House, an anticipated 40 percent of the planet’s cropland will be exposed to severe drought for at least three months per year by year 2050. Data shows the breadbasket of the United States could be among the regions hardest hit.

In addition to these staggering drought statistics, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations project that agriculture will need to produce nearly 50 percent more food by 2050 to feed a growing population. It is also predicted that as global demand increases, crop yields could drop by 30 percent as farmers contend with a hotter and more volatile planet.

The future sustainability of farming relies on research and development now.

Thinking about tomorrow

Universities, government agencies, non-profits, and other for-profit businesses research to develop climate-smart tools to help drive efficiencies and support agricultural sustainability on the farm. These decision-support tools improve farming productivity and resiliency in the face of a changing climate. The big challenge faced by agronomists and plant breeders is introducing new developments that make a decisive contribution toward sustainable food and energy supplies for the world. That’s where Wintersteiger comes in.
