Mike Pearson looks at the consumption of peanuts and peanut oil. Did you know Americans consumer 10 pounds of peanuts a year?
The 24th annual Southern Peanuts Growers Association meeting was held in late July where it was discovered that 7 percent more acres were planted in 2023.
While some fields of peanuts have struggled due to floods and other weather effects this year-- overall the crop looks good.
Another area discussed was policy and that means the Farm Bill.
The farm bill is probably facing an extension and not the creation of a new one in 2023. Legislators say a new one probably won't be ironed out this year and a decision will be made in late September to pass an extension. The good news is that it probably won't have a big effect on the industry.
Something else discussed at the meeting was new uses for peanuts. These include using them to feed chickens and other non-food uses.
Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, a farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
