The crop progress report shows conditions remain steady in the Midwest. Corn condition rated at 77% in good and excellent categories, down 1% from last week’s 78%. At this point last year, only 67% of the corn crop was in good/excellent condition.
So far, here are the good/excellent conditions in the top five corn producing states: Iowa (81%), Illinois (83%), Nebraska (86%), Minnesota (84%), Kansas (55%).
States showing deterioration in the corn condition include Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Soybean condition
Overall, 73% of the soybeans are in good/excellent condition, the same as last week. In 2017, only 66% of the crop was good/excellent condition.
So far, here are the good/excellent conditions in the top five soybean producing states: Illinois (78%), Iowa (79%), Minnesota (79%), Nebraska (85%), North Dakota (80%).
In the Midwest, Minnesota dropped 4% and Illinois dropped 1% in quality compared to the previous week.
Soybeans emerging
The USDA report shows 95% of the soybean crop has emerged, that’s up from the four-year average of 89%.
The two states in the Midwest struggling to meet the weekly average are Michigan (85%) and North Dakota (78%).
Soybeans blooming
The crop progress report shows 12% of the soybean crop is blooming. That’s up from the four-year average of 5% and last year’s 8%.
Two Midwest states stand out in the report for blooming: Illinois (23%) and Nebraska (14%).
Corn silking
Two states also stand out for the amount of corn producing silk this week. Kansas producers report 13% of the crop producing silk and 16% in Kentucky.
Overall, 5% of the corn planted is silking, which is slightly above the four year average of 3%.
