Ever hear of expected progeny difference? EPD refers to the genetic capability of each potential mating combination for animals. Consider cattle EPD traits versus human mating aspirations.
A calf is considered an individual, not just an animal. While some men and women may want an “animal” for a mate, others seek the strong, sensitive type.
The calf’s birth weight can be an indicator of strength or fragility. Some like the size of the Hulk, while others prefer Bing Crosby’s more delicate stature.
Weaning and yearly growth rates can determine how fast an animal might grow over the average of the breed. I wanted a tall husband. All I had to do was look at Terry’s toddler pictures to see how robust he would end up.
Here’s a kicker. Meat and muscle mass and how calves lay on marbling and fat are key indicators of meat quality. That means I won the lottery with a prime choice husband!
The EPDs reveal how sensitive the individual is and how likely they are to give you males or females. Score! I got an understanding man who isn’t afraid to show tender emotion. Our two daughters are a handful!
Final EPD appraisals often center on the eye appeal and structural correctness of the beast. I cleared that contest with Terry’s blue sparklers, a ready tan and two hands that are always ready to help others.
If you’d said to me years ago that my and Terry’s EPDs dictated the city girl marrying the farm boy, I would have replied, “Find yourself another measuring stick!”
You can have great EPDs in man or beast, but they both better know how to woo their potential mates. Ask Terry how that went for him when our first date was at my 10th high school reunion.
