Winter wheat condition improved slightly in Texas and Oklahoma this past week, the states said on Monday.

The two states provide weekly crop condition updates, while the full breadth of the weekly crop updates typically does not start until April.

In Texas, winter wheat improved to 50% good to excellent, 42% fair, 9% poor and 3% very poor as of Sunday, versus 46%, 42%, 9%, and 3% a week earlier.

Moisture during the week helped the crop. Three inches of snow fell in some northern areas of Texas, while scattered showers of 0.1 to 4 inches fell elsewhere. The heaviest rain was in eastern areas.

Corn planting began in south central, upper coast and southern regions, while sorghum was sowed in Coastal Bend and Lower Valley.

Topsoil moisture statewide was rated 16% surplus, 60% adequate, 20% short and 4% very short.

Oklahoma wheat endured single-digit temperatures during the week, along with sleet and snow. By the weekend, temperatures rose to about 70 degrees.

Extreme to exceptional drought conditions persist in the western half of the state. Topsoil and subsoil moisture were mostly rated short to very short.

Winter wheat there was 2% excellent, 40% good/excellent, 43% fair, 11% poor and 4% very poor. The numbers a week ago were 1%, 41%, 42%, 12% and 4%.

Winter wheat jointing reached 3%, 13 points behind normal.

Corn field preparation reached 10%, 18 behind last year and 14 behind normal.
