GAME DAY: Grain bin maker Sukup Manufacturing will build a Safe T Home at Kinnick Stadium during the annual Iowa vs. Iowa State football game.

Sukup Manufacturing Co. has announced that a team will build a Sukup Safe T Home at the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series football game Sept. 8 in Iowa City. The build will take place at Kinnick Stadium, near the Nile Kinnick statue south of the stadium beginning at 1 p.m.

Former pro football players Tim Dwight and Sage Rosenfels will lead the construction team. It will also include other well-known former student athletes, such as Jeff Horner, Jack Whitver, Greg Brunner, Lane Danielsen and Jadda Buckley.

The Sukup Safe T Home is a hurricane-proof structure the company created by using a modified grain bin. The home is hurricane-, earthquake-, fire-, termite- and machete-proof, and can be constructed in one day or less. There are 350 Safe T Homes around the world in places like Haiti and Peru.

History of the Safe T Home
After the January 2010 earthquake devastated Haiti, company officials at Sukup saw an opportunity to help. They designed the Safe T Home, measuring 18 feet in diameter and made entirely of metal, so it is resistant to termites and moisture. These homes are also virtually earthquake-proof. Each home can sleep 10 or more and features a double-roofed system that displaces heat; a full-size, lockable steel door; two windows that can be locked from within; and a water collection system.

The Safe T Home is built to withstand strong winds. In 2016, Hurricane Matthew devastated Haiti with winds over 145 mph and all 200 of the homes prevailed with just minor damage. In contrast, the majority of traditional homes in the area were destroyed. Safe T Homes were able to hold up to 60 people in each home to ride out the storm. The Safe T Home has a life expectancy of 75 years and can be assembled on-site with simple hand tools. Safe T Homes are also located in Africa and Peru.
