Farmers are often not alone when it comes to working through management challenges. You’re contacting consultants, perhaps working with dealers, and maybe getting advice from other sources. When it comes to soil and water, having a common framework for discussion is important. That’s what drove the creation of a new publication from the University of Wyoming that aims to provide a better understanding of a range of topics surrounding soil and water.

“Irrigation Management: Basics of Soil Water” was written by Vivek Sharma, Extension irrigation specialist, University of Wyoming. The aim of the publication is to provide a better understanding of definitions and terms associated with soil water to aid communications among agricultural producers, irrigation practitioners, Extension personnel, researchers, and water management and regulatory personnel, Sharma says.

The 12-page guide can act as a primer for those just getting into irrigation and soil water management, but even experienced irrigators might benefit from a winter read of the free publication to get a better handle on a range of issues — from soil composition to soil-water interaction.

The publication covers a lot of territory, from the interaction of soil and crops to how crops act under specific weather conditions that can impact evapotranspiration.

Sharma is based at the Powell Research and Extension Center and is an assistant professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Wyoming.
