The tall, bicycle-type flags in the approaches to and on the edges of corn, soybeans and sugarbeet fields indicate whether the fields contain conventional or herbicide technology crops.

The University of Arkansas and the Arkansas agricultural industry came up with the idea to help applicators avoid spraying the wrong herbicide on a field and to make them aware of where they had to be especially careful about herbicide drift.

Here’s what the colors stand for:

Red -- Conventional/non-herbicide resistant technology

Green -- LibertyLink technology

White – Roundup Ready technology

Yellow – Clearfield rice and STS soybean technologgy

Black – Extend technology

Black and white checkerboard – Roundup Ready and Extend technology

Teal – Enlist technology

Where stacked technology is used, you may see several flags of different colors.
