The Agricultural Systems Technology (AST) major has been added to Oklahoma State University’s Ferguson College of Agriculture's undergraduate degree offerings.

The degree will better prepare students for careers in industries that increasingly rely on technology, business and problem-solving skills. Students who complete the AST degree program, which is housed in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, will be prepared for a career in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, agriculture, government and construction.

The AST degree will serve a growing workforce demand in technology support, business operations, sales and marketing and management, said Mari Chinn, biosystems and agricultural engineering department head.

“The curriculum has been designed to provide students practical knowledge in a variety of sectors in agriculture and natural resources, while developing an aptitude to apply different technologies, identify problems, formulate solutions, analyze system improvements and determine related socioeconomic impacts,” Chinn said.

Producing graduates who are prepared to enter the workforce is a top priority for the Ferguson College of Agriculture, and Associate Dean Cynda Clary said the addition of the AST major does just that.

“The agricultural industry is increasingly reliant on professionals with a large knowledge base that combines traditional practices, new technologies and business insight,” Clary said. “The AST major allows us to serve students in the Ferguson College of Agriculture by providing them a specialized education that brings those essential skills together into a four-year degree.”
