South Dakota State University will be holding crop tours will be held June 28 in Brookings and June 29 in Wall.

Brookings tour

The program begins at the SDSU Seed Technology lab located on the SDSU Innovation Campus, 2380 Research Parkway, Brookings, S.D.

The crop agenda is:

Technology Laboratory Seed Tour - Brent Turnipseed, manager of the SDSU Seed Technology Laboratory and associate professor of Plant Science

Wall tour

The tour in Wall starts June 29 at 2 pm Mountain Time.

The tour looks at a rotation study and alternative crop trials and winter wheat and spring grains variety trials. Speakers include: Thandiwe Nleya, SDSU extension agronomist, John Rickertsen SDSU research associate, and Bruce Swan, SDSU senior research technician. Take Exit 109 off Interstate 90, behind state DOT shop.

At 4 p.m. the tour will move to review winter wheat and spring grains variety trials. Research plots include winter wheat, spring wheat and oat variety trials, and a warm season forage trial. SDSU researchers will discuss the performance of winter wheat in rotation with millet, corn, sunflower, safflower, barley, field pea and cover crops. Alternative crops trials at this site include; safflower and field pea variety trials, and a cool season forage trial.

Directions for this tour: Take exit 107 off Interstate 90 and travel 5.5 miles north on Cedar Butte road. Turn west on 228th Street and travel for 2 miles to 186th Ave, turn south and go 0.5 miles, the plots are on the east side of the road.
