Corn yields varied from just 75 bpa in east-central Ohio to 200 bpa in Iowa and Minnesota, with an average of 156, compared to USDA’s Aug. 12 estimate of 175.1. Several growers estimated soybean yields at 30 bpa, with the highest at 65 in Minnesota. The average was 45.6, while USDA projected 48.9 bpa last month.

"SDS has really impacted beans in our area,” said a grower in northeast Iowa, who put soybean yields at 52 bpa and corn at 200.

“Corn looks good, but a far cry from a record,” was the verdict of a producer in southern Nebraska with 181-bushel yields.

Though many fields look good a variety of problems were reported as a result of varied weather during the growing season. Late planting and then dry weather took a toll in Ohio, while too much rain, or not enough, caused trouble elsewhere. And many producers chimed in a tip-back in corn reducing yield potential.

A Minnesota farmer summed it up:

“Beans look great here in Faribault County where they didn't drown out this spring, and where SDS is not taking its toll,” he said. “Corn this year is the unknown. Fields look good from the road, but when you walk into the fields, you see a different story. Those who chose to save money and not use fungicide this year got hit hard by northern leaf and Asian rust. Our corn is also showing anywhere from 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch tip back on the ears. I feel we have a good crop going, but not as good as everyone is calling for.”
