The 2016 growing season wasn’t ideal in many parts of the U.S. But while growers continue to report concerns over disease and foul weather, those providing Feedback From The Field this week noted improving corn and soybean yields.

While the overall yields provided this season continue to lag those estimated by USDA, the most recent data in this week was far more encouraging. Average yields for both corn and soybeans approached the 174.4 bpa and 50.6 bpa published by USDA Sept. 12.

Several growers in Iowa expected corn yields to top 200 bpa, with soybeans 60 bpa or better.

“Crop slowly maturing,” said a producer northwest of Des Moines, while a grower closer to Sioux City said “yield checks in corn used for silage are coming in about the same to a little less than last year.”

But even in Iowa, conditions were far from perfect in some places.

“Very wet, and late season heat,” commented a producer closer to Omaha.” Lots of disease.”

Though some areas on the fringes of the central Midwest were too dry this summer, for others the trouble was too much of a good thing.

“Humid hot weather is bringing disease to maturing crops,” reported a grower north of Peoria near the Illinois River.  “Will probably affect quality more than yield. SDS is showing up in nearly mature beans.”

“Some ear and stalk rot showing up,” was the verdict of another northern Illinois farmer.  “Too wet and wind damage,” added another.
