While two-week forecasts continue to call for above normal precipitation over much of the Corn Belt, some growers say their crops are already badly in need of a drink right now.

“No rain here in Southeast Illinois,” reported a producer south of U.S. 50 not far from the Indiana border. “Corn turning greyish green in dry spots”

Overall, those reporting Feedback last week rated corn fields a little better than average. Soybeans were doing a little better, with the average between “Fair” and “Good.”

“Haven't had rain in 3-4 weeks,” said another Illinois grower west of Springfield. “Tile has stopped running weeks ago. Pastures and yards are turning brown.”

Other parts of the Midwest have seen a roller coaster of weather, including floods in the spring and unusually hot weather in June before temperatures eased this week.

“Storms of June 22 did considerable damage to many corn fields,” reported an operator near Seneca, Illinois, in the northern part of the state, which was hit by a powerful EF-2 tornado. Winds were measured above 115 MPH according to the National Weather Service. “Also, as much as 4-5 inches of rain in many places.  Most fields should recover, but yield will be affected and harvest will be a challenge. “

Despite the many challenges, some fields still look good. “Dry pockets abound,” reported a farmer in western Iowa. “As corn grows it's covering up the poor areas that were too wet this spring.  We could use another rain soon.  Our crop here isn't as good as last year right now but it sure looks good.  We have over 10 straight days of 90+ degrees which is unusual for June. “
