The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will be discussing recent drought actions and hear about proposed programs to assist farmers and ranchers at its meeting next week.

The board will hear from state officials and agricultural stakeholders on drought response as well as proposed funding to further sustainable agriculture as part of the Governor’s proposed $100 billion California Comeback Plan.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. via GoToWebinar.

“The Governor has proposed a $5.1 billion comprehensive drought and water infrastructure package, ” said state Food and Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross. “This funding will improve our state’s overall water resilience, invest in drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, and provide for multi-benefit land repurposing among a number of other investments.

"Local communities, environmental stakeholders and agriculture will leverage these investments to further our state’s overall water security," she said.

Invited speakers include: John Yarbrough, California Department of Water Resources; Chris Scheuring, California Farm Bureau Federation; Joe Del Bosque, Del Bosque Farms; Cannon Michael, Bowles Farming Co.; Devon Jones, Mendocino County Farm Bureau; Steven Springhorn, California Department of Water Resources; Kealii Bright, California Department of Conservation; Scott Adams, California Department of Technology; Jenny Lester Moffitt, California Department of Food and Agriculture and other invited speakers.

“It’s going to be a challenging summer for a lot of growers and communities,” said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture. “A majority of our state is in severe or exceptional drought. Conservation is key and all Californians need to do their part in conserving this vital limited resource.”

The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.
