Mike Pearson takes a look at the apple market overseas.

Mike Pearson tells us how the apple trade is changing both in the USA and India.

In the late 1990's, the United States started exporting apples to India.

The trade peaked in 2018-- when India was importing more apples than four countries in the world.

Then the trade war when Donald Trump was president with India over steel came to a head.

The USA placed a tariff on steel and in return India placed a 70 percent tariff on apples-- making them a very expensive item for food there.

The number of apples going to India eventually fell 80 percent since 2018's high. This also meant that apples were taken off India's shelves eventually.

Now, tariffs have been removed from apples, lentils and chick peas.

Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, a farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
