Max Armstrong looks at PRRS, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, which is an expensive issue for the swine industry. It appeared in 1983, and while it creates a financial issue for the industry it also causes stresses across any herd. The disease has long had no solution which requires herd depopulation and clearing out facilities. A recent story by Kevin Schulz looks at the issue including a new tool, breeding pigs that may be resistant to PRRS.
