Corn

The latest crop report shows 62% of this year’s corn crop has been planted, down 1% from the four-year average. Last year, producers had 68% in the ground.

Illinois is leading the Midwest with 90% planted (up 16% from last week). Indiana has 73% planted (31% increase) and Iowa has 65% completed (up 25% from last week). And the upper Midwest is finally getting corn in the ground: Minnesota 40% (up 31% from last week); Michigan 34% (up 20%); Wisconsin and Pennsylvania 30% (up 15% and 21%, respectively); North Dakota 35% (up 28%); and South Dakota 21% (up 15%).

Soybeans

Soybeans moved ahead of the four-year average by 9%, with 35% of the acres complete, with many states planting a lot of beans last week. State leaders are Illinois with 66% completed (up 37% from last week); Indiana is 53% complete (up 30%); Iowa has 33% finished (up 21%); Ohio 31% (up 23%); Michigan 18% (up 12%); Wisconsin 13% (up 8%); and Minnesota 11% completed (up 10%).

Corn emerged

Looking at emergence, 28% of the corn is up and growing. That’s one point up from the four-year average of 27%. In 2017, 29% of the corn crop had emerged.

In the Midwest, Missouri corn growers say 64% has emerged; Illinois 63%; Indiana 32% and Iowa is at 26%.

Several states are behind the average with corn emergence, since they haven’t been able to plant as much. They include Wisconsin: 8; Colorado: 7%; Michigan: 6%; Pennsylvania: 4%; and North Dakota and Minnesota report 1%.

Soybeans emerged

The crop progress report shows 10% of soybeans have emerged; the four-year average has 6%. In 2017, 7% of the soybean crop had emerged.

The states with the most soybeans emerging include: Louisiana: 62%; Mississippi: 46%; Arkansas: 35% and Illinois with 24%.

Several states are behind the crop progress report average include Kansas with 6%; Iowa shows 5%; Tennessee with 4%; Ohio shows 3% has emerged and Wisconsin, Michigan and Kentucky farmers say 2% of the soybean crop has emerged.
