The corn harvest is about 15% below where it was over the past four years at this time. The latest crop progress report shows 22% is harvested. The average is 37% at this point.
Illinois is leading the Midwest with 38% complete and Indiana is trailing with 24%. However, many states in the Midwest remain in the single digits including Iowa (8%); Kansas (8%); South Dakota (6%); Wisconsin (5%); Minnesota and North Dakota report 4%.
Corn maturity
The crop progress report shows 82% of the corn crop planted this spring is now mature, that’s down from the four year average of 87%. Three states appear to be struggling to meet this year’s average including Wisconsin (58%); Colorado (59%) and North Dakota (62%).
Corn condition
The crop report shows the corn condition remains steady with 49% in good condition; 25% in fair and 15% in excellent. Last week, the report showed 49% in good; 25% in fair and 14% in excellent.
Soybeans harvested
The corn harvest is not the only harvest plodding along this year. The crop report shows 36% is complete, down from the four year average of 43%.
States leading the harvest are Illinois (52%); Indiana (42%); Wisconsin with 32% and Iowa reporting 26%. However, Kansas, Minnesota and Missouri report only 22% finished.
Soybeans dropping leaves
One of the bright spots in the crop report is the amount of soybean plants dropping leaves. It shows 89% of the soybean crop is now dropping leaves, that’s up two percent from the four year average of 87%.
Soybean condition
The crop condition report shows soybeans remain steady in the field. It shows 49% in good condition; 27% in fair and 12% in excellent condition. Last week, the report showed 48% in good; 28% in fair and 12% in excellent condition.
