Bruegger's bakeries, a national bagel chain, announced Thursday plans to transition its supplies to crate-free pork.

"Bruegger's Bagels cares deeply about creating a more humane and sustainable world," said David Austin, Bruegger's president, in a statement to the Humane Society of the United States.

"To that end, we're proud to announce that we're working with our pork suppliers to eliminate gestation crates within our supply chain, and we recognize it could take up until 2022 to achieve this goal," Austin said.

The bakery chain has more than 300 locations in 26 states and is headquartered in Burlington, Vt. It also has stores in Canada.

The restaurant joins McDonald's, Kroger, Hillshire Brands and others in plans to eliminate gestation crates from its supply chain.
