In recognition of October as National Pork Month, the Minnesota Pork Board created a short documentary to showcase the many facets of the pork industry.
Featuring three Minnesota pork enthusiasts, one of whom is an owner of Schwartz Farms in Sleepy Eye, Minn., “Meat of the North” highlights all facets of the pork industry.

In the video, the trio visits the Sleepy Eye pig farm and an iconic Minnesota butcher shop, Schmidt’s Meat Market in Nicollet, Minn. They learn how to cook pork sliders at Kitchen Window cooking school in Minneapolis.
The goal of the documentary is to help consumers connect with where their food comes from. In a state with more than 3,000 pig farms, the Minnesota Pork Board and its many producers are proud to be the state with the second-highest number of pigs marketed in the U.S. — about 16.4 million in 2017 — proving it is truly the “meat of the north.”

“Pig farmers are an integral part of communities across Minnesota,” says Jill Resler, Minnesota Pork Board chief operating officer. “We are excited to share the ‘Meat of the North’ video. [Its content] is a testament to the versatility of pork and showcases the care Minnesota pig farmers provide to their animals every day,” she adds.
