The 64th Southern Hardwood Forest Research Group annual meeting will be held Feb. 23 at the Capps Entrepreneurial Center, Delta Branch Experiment Station in Stoneville, Miss.
The program starts at 8 a.m. and concludes by 2:30 p.m. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with coffee and donuts available.
A $25 registration fee will be collected that covers meeting handouts, refreshments, a catered lunch, and Continuing Forestry Education Credits. Make checks out to Delta Research Foundation.
This year’s program theme will focus on Water Management and Forests in the Mid-South. Presentations addressing this subject will be made by David Johnson, chief of the Water Quality Section, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg, Miss., and Dr. Jacob F. Berkowitz, research soil scientist, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research and Development Center, Vicksburg Miss.
In addition, Dr. Margaret Devall, Dr. Dan Marion, and Zanethia Barnett with the Center for Bottomland Hardwoods Research will report on their current research projects.
Following a lunch catered on-site, Chip Morgan, executive vice president of the Delta Council, will give a status report on Congressional support for hardwood research.
Dr. Kier Klepzig, assistant director of the Southern Research Station, will share his perspective on the outlook for bottomland hardwoods and related stream research conducted by the center.
The meeting will conclude with a summary of the latest research accomplishments at the center presented by the Project Leader, Dr. Ted Leininger.
Approval is being sought for Continuing Forestry Education credits (usually 4.5 contact hours in Category 1-CF). Copies of the CFE contact hour notice will be available at the registration desk, as will a signup sheet for those wanting to receive credit for this meeting.
The seventh annual Dr. John Adams Student Poster Competition is open to any currently enrolled undergraduate, M.S., or Ph.D. student working on original research that investigates some aspect of Southern hardwood forestry. Submissions must be received by 5 p.m., Feb. 15 (limit of one entry per student).
