Beef cow-calf producers recognize the importance of staying informed on all aspects of their operation, and the fourth and final webinar in the Winter Cow Webinar series from the Iowa Beef Center at Iowa State University will help them do that. The session is set for 6 to 8 p.m. March 10, and it focuses on pasture and forage management. 

The series provides timely topics for beef cow management, as well as the opportunity for producers to access the information by joining the webinar at their own location or at any of the nine host sites (see the list below). Beth Reynolds, ISU Extension program specialist, says she and other ISU Extension specialists have had good feedback from cattle producers regarding this series. 

Rebecca Vittetoe, a field agronomist with ISU Extension, will begin the March 10 webinar discussion with information on spring forage management. Jeff Mathias, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service state grasslands specialist for Iowa, will share information on some changes to grazing Conservation Reserve Program land. The final speaker of the night is Adam Janke, an assistant professor and ISU Extension wildlife specialist, who will provide information about wildlife interactions when grazing cattle. 

Free webinar, valuable information 

There is no cost to attend the webinar at an in-person location or to view it at home. Participants who plan to attend one of the in-person sites listed below are encouraged to preregister by calling the host location.

Calving clinic at Marshalltown March 12

Cattle producers are invited to attend a calving clinic on March 12 at the Marshall County Extension office. Chris Clark,  ISU Extension beef specialist, says the educational program will offer valuable information about calving, health and nutrition.

“We’ll talk about the calving process and successfully managing that process. We’ll also discuss basic nutrition and health management as they relate to health and vigor of the newborn calf,” he says. “Spring calving season is underway, or right around the corner, for most producers. This program will provide timely information for producers that they can start using right away.” 

The clinic will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 March 12 at the Marshall County Extension office, 2608 S. 2nd St., Suite E, Marshalltown. An evening meal, sponsored by Farm Credit Services of America, will begin at 5:30 p.m.; the educational program, sponsored by Marshall County Extension, begins at 6 p.m. Thanks to support from Farm Credit Services of America and Marshall County Extension, the meal and educational program will be offered free of charge.

“We’d like to have people preregister to give us a head count for the meal,” Clark says. “Please preregister by March 10 by calling Marshall County Extension at 641-752-1551.”
