FAMILY PORTRAIT: The John Deere 70 diesel makes a good backdrop for the Scott family, including (from left) Nicole and Brian Scott, Jamie Campbell, Matthew Scott, Melanie Campbell, Robert Scott and John Scott.

The elderly farmer at the recent Indiana Farm Management Tour stop at the Scott farm in Carroll County showed lots of interest in the old John Deere tractor in the corner of the farm shop where the crowd was gathered. During the break, he milled around the tractor.

That was OK unless you were a photographer trying to get a picture of the tractor. Whenever the photographer repositioned so the gentleman wouldn’t be in the picture, the gentleman moved and slid back into the picture.

Then the photographer introduced himself to the elderly farmer, and everything took on a different light. It turns out he was the patriarch of the family — John Scott’s dad and Brian’s grandpa. Brian and John did the talking on the tour.

Robert Scott was happy to talk about the tractor, explaining that they bought it a good distance away and brought it home. Later they worked on it. The tractor is a 1956 Model 70 diesel. It’s a permanent fixture on the farm today, and the family sometimes gathers around the machine for a picture.

In fact, Robert was agreeable to let the photographer take his picture with the tractor. But first he said something to another person standing by, who turned out to be his son-in-law. He wanted not just himself, but the whole family in the picture with the tractor.

People were milling around and talking to various family members, but it soon became evident that if Grandpa wanted everybody in the picture, everybody would be in the picture. Other members of the Scott family took time out long enough to pose with Grandpa and the old John Deere. It’s the picture running with this story.
