Corn stalks, bred to carry the weight of higher yields, are puncturing farm tires. Stalk or “stubble” damage was a topic of discussion at this year’s farm shows, and it is a problem that tire makers are hoping to correct. Representatives from Bridgestone-Firestone, Goodyear-Titan, Michelin Ag, and others are testing new compounds and designs that will make tires more resilient to stalk puncture. In the meantime, tire companies recommend installing mechanical devices called stubble shoes or stompers on the front end of machines. The devices knock down the stalks before the tires drive over them to minimize damage. Equipment companies like May Wes sell stubble shoes (visit www.maywes.com). Your local equipment dealer also may have them in stock.
